Steven Perlin is a Los Angeles based multimedia artist who focuses on creative documentary photography and filmmaking. Over nearly two decades, he has built up an immense archive of 35mm still and 16mm moving images depicting his subjects who include musicians, street artists, painters and other photographers that live and work in and around his native Southern California. Perlin is highly discerning about what images are made public, and more importantly how often. The lapse of time between his shoots and his images’ release adds further to the dreamy quality and ambiguity of time that are important qualities of his work.

For the last eight years, Perlin has been documenting painter Mark Maggiori who is known for his colorful and contemporary Western scene paintings. The images in this exhibition capture behind-the-scene moments during Maggiori’s staging of his subjects while on site in Wyoming and Arizona.
